Droxford Remembers D-Day 70

A programme of events and exhibition to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and Churchill’s famous meetings of Allied Commanders at Droxford Station, organised by Friends of Droxford Church, Droxford Country Fair, and Droxford Junior School, with support from the D-Day Museum (Portsmouth), Heritage Lottery Fund and Hampshire County Council.

Calendar of Events

Wed 28th May – Visit to D-Day Map Room (RMP Museum, Southwick House)

Guided visit by arrangement with RMP Museum, Droxford RBL, and Friends of Droxford Church to the site of Ramsay’s HQ and nearby US HQ used by General Eisenhower,

Fri 30th May 7.30pm – Ben Stoneham, with Tim King (Droxford Church)

“Churchill in Droxford: the decisions which influenced D-Day in June 1944”

Thurs 5th June 7.30pm – Tony Williams (Droxford Church)

“History of Droxford Station and its role in D Day”

Fri 6th June – Royal British Legion Summer Party

Sat 7th June – 12.30-4.30 pm  Droxford Country Fair (The Square, Droxford)

Re-enactment of Churchill’s D-Day Meetings at Droxford Station in June 1944  including model of Droxford Station, working steam engine, character actors with contemporary costumes and vehicles, and vintage aircraft fly-past.

  • D-Day Exhibition in the Church (supported by then D-Day Museum: Droxford Junior School will display the outcomes from their Oral History D-Day Project on display boards that will also illustrate research findings and the talks.
  • Competitions and other 1940’s themed sideshows
  • A professional video photographer will provide a video record of the D-Day re-enactment.
  • A D-Day Walking Trail, from Droxford Church to the site of the former Station and railway (now the Meon Valley Trail) and linking to the other Meon Valley villages (Meonstoke, Corhampton, Exton and Soberton)

 

Sun 8th June – 11.00am  Common Worship and Commemoration, Droxford Parish Church

Common Worship in Droxford’s 12th Century Norman Church – to include an Act of Remembrance for those who lost their lives in WWI and WWII, and in particular to mark the momentous decisions made in the parish in June 1944.

Sun 8th June – 3.00-6.00 pm   1940’s Tea Dance: Cakes, Songs and Dancing (Droxford Village Hall)

An afternoon of vintage song and dance – instant Dance classes for absolute beginners.

Dazzling Dance display.  Ragroof Players with Friends of Droxford Church will put on an afternoon entertainment of WWII songs and 1940’s dancing – including tea and cakes. SCRUMPTIOUS!!
