“PYRENEES CYCLE CHALLENGE”
In June John Jack will attempt to cycle the Pyrenean Cols which are regularly featured in Le Tour de France. All sponsorship monies will be donated to the Friends of Droxford Church.
The combination of variable weather in the mountains, the steep gradients and the length of the climbs will be the greatest challenge. The Col du Tourmalet is his main challenge. It is the highest road pass in the French Pyrenees climbing 1404 metres in 19 kilometres to the summit at 2115 metres. The gradient averages 7.4% and exceeds 10% towards the top.
John reports that his training is on schedule, despite the weather and he will have cycled 3,000 kilometres [over 2000 miles] in five months to prepare for the challenge. For the first time in 50+ years of cycling he is seeking out the hills rather than avoiding them.
He has lived in Droxford since 1976 with his wife Marion and is a firm believer that the church can become part of a “village hub” for the benefit of all the community.
