Restoration, Heritage and Wilfrid’s Cafe

The Droxford Community Hub Project

Update March 2020

December 2019 marked the completion the Church restoration and Community Hub project. After six years of hard work and generous support by many members of the local community we are now able to celebrate the successful outcome – a newly restored church, an annex for the community facilities including kitchen, toilets and office space, and a new heritage display featuring the history of the church and village in Droxford. None of this would have been possible without significant grants received from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Hampshire County Council, Garfield Weston Foundation, and South Downs National Park.

Wilfrid’s Cafe

On January 6th 2020, Wilfrid’s Cafe opened for the first time. Powered by a new team of volunteers under the auspices of Droxford Community Hub CIC, Wilfrid’s is offering coffee, tea and cakes on three afternoons per week (Monday, Thursday and Friday). In spite of the adverse weather, trading in the first 8 weeks has exceeded our expectations.

The success of the Cafe will not just be in the trading results, but in the opportunities it provides for building our community in Droxford and the surrounding area; for the volunteers who say that they love working in the Cafe because they meet new people; for the visitors to the Cafe who enjoy having somewhere to come for a chat; for the dog walkers, bike riders & joggers who drop in for a cup of tea after their activity who like our ‘muddy boots & dogs welcome’ policy; for those that have begun to use the facilities for their Club or meeting; for those who are interested in the history of Droxford who come to look at the Heritage display. Many different successes all of them helping to build a sustainable community.

So a big thank you to the volunteers and cake-bakers team who have helped the Cafe to make such a promising start. As we move forward to summertime they are looking to extend the opening hours to fit in with the longer days, and are hoping shortly to open on Saturdays and also to extend the our weekly opening times. If you think you might be interested in volunteering or baking for the Cafe please come and visit the Cafe, talk to any of the volunteers or contact Margaret Wallace on
